We really have some truly unique and beautiful seed pods here in Australia, don’t we? Our home is filled with pods of all shapes and sizes which we have collected on our daily walks. Recently we were lucky enough to come across some Moreton Bay Chestnuts. Ironically we found these right in the middle of suburbia – along the footpath near the entrance to Fox Studios here in Sydney. There are some spectacular Moreton Bay Figs along that road and despite the fact that we were walking in torrential rain, I couldn’t resist stopping to collect a few of these beauties that had fallen to the ground.
The size and shape of these seed pods lend themselves perfectly to imaginative play. They look just like little boats and R (5 years) spent a happy afternoon in the sunshine creating stories with them. I filled a plastic tub with water and he added some weeds lovely plants from our lawn to represent lilly pads in his make believe pond.
We have a yellow Clematis trailing across our pergola and soon some of these blooms had become passengers in the little seed pod boats. We also have an abundance of Sheoak Pods in our nature collection and these too made an appearance in R’s water tub.
R piled the little seed pod boats full of Sheoak Pod passengers and drifted them across the water, narrating stories as he always does throughout his play. We love to spend quiet afternoons like this in backyard. If things are getting a little crazy with our day then all we need to do is head outside, fill up a tub with water and things become so much calmer.
